Vellichor is “a word that describes the strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are infused with the passage of time”.
I love words. I especially love weird words. I came across Vellichor weeks ago when I was trying to decide what to call my little self-publishing company. I could have just stuck with my pen name, but I felt like if I ever wanted to do something else (maybe a quirky bookstore/tea shop) then everything could fall under one umbrella…and thus, Vellichor Ink was born.
I wanted a word that felt a little magical and mysterious but that wasn’t difficult to pronounce. I toyed with using Coddiwomple (another favorite weird word), wander, Lexiphile, Omnilegent, Logophile, Wanderlust, Gallivant, paper/press/ink, and on and on. I googled something like “unique bookish words” and found Vellichor and I couldn’t get it out of my head. I know the word…I know that strange wistfulness of a used bookstore…it draws me in to every single one I pass. And the dreamy thought of the time passing across the pages of my own books, that maybe they’ll end up in some of my favorite used bookstores around the world, was just too good a thought to pass up. So, Vellichor Ink it is!
The logo was fairly easy. I knew it needed books. But I wanted something that also gave a nod to my love of travel and whimsy and a hot air balloon fit the bill. I also added the silhouette of our sweet pup, Angus, who was my writing partner for the longest time until he crossed the rainbow bridge two years ago. He needed a permanent place in all this (don’t tell the cat though, she’ll be livid!).
So, here we are. A pen name, an LLC, a logo, and a whole lotta dreams.
